Columbia School Linguistic Society Mid-Year Research Award

The Columbia School Linguistic Society (henceforth the Society) is accepting proposals for mid-year research stipends of $1000. The deadline for receipt of mid-year applications, which require a recommendation from a current member of the Society, is January 15, 2021. 

The Society is especially encouraging applications for the purpose of preparing proposals for full-year Fellowships for the 2021-2022 academic year.  We expect that next year’s fellowship program will be similar to this year’s, which can be found here.  The Society expects to distribute the full-year RFP for 2021-2022 in the spring with an anticipated submission deadline of May 31, 2021.  

To apply for the present $1000 mid-year research stipend, provide: a statement that describes the research problem to be addressed (a grammatical, lexical, or phonological topic from the perspective of Columbia School linguistics); a brief description of relevant existing analyses; details on the progress the analyst may have made to date; and a preliminary description of the proposed research. The application is not to exceed 6 double-spaced pages written in 12-point font. The application should include, in addition, the applicant's CV, email address, the name of the applicant's institution, and the name of the Society member who is recommending the applicant.

Awardees are encouraged to participate on a regular basis in Society activities including the bi-monthly Society Seminar, as well as the Society Reading Group.  Awardees who do not go on to submit an application for a full-year Fellowship would be expected to submit a summary, not later than August 31, 2021, of the work they accomplished as part of the mid-year award.

Applications for mid-year awards will be reviewed by members of the Society’s Executive Committee, assisted by such additional reviewers as they may deem appropriate. The application must be submitted electronically to Cara Schiff, the Administrative Manager of the Columbia School Executive Committee, at admin@csling.org, not later than January 15, 2021.  Notification of awards is expected by mid-February.
