POST DOCTORAL

Research Fellowship and Dissertation Fellowship
Request for proposals 2019-2020

The Columbia School Linguistic Society (henceforth the Society) invites applications from holders of Ph.D.'s in linguistics or related areas for two types of postdoctoral awards: (1) Postdoctoral Scholarship; and (2) Postdoctoral Residential Fellowship. Successful applicants (awardees) will undertake a linguistic research project from the perspective of Columbia School linguistics (henceforth CS).

The research project undertaken by each awardee will address a grammatical, lexical, or phonological problem, or a problem in another area of linguistics, studied from the perspective of CS. All awardees must be holders of the Ph.D. There will be (at most) one awardee of the Postdoctoral Residential Fellowship, who must reside in New York City or its surrounds during the time of the Fellowship. (Note however that the Society cannot provide assistance with visas or health insurance that may be required.) The Society will make every effort to make a mentor available in cases where this is appropriate.

Financial Information

Awards will cover the period from September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020. The Postdoctoral Residential Fellow will receive a stipend of $65,000; awardees of the Postdoctoral Scholarship will receive a stipend of between $10,000 and $20,000. All stipends are calculated on the basis of a 12-month calendar year. Stipend payments will be made on a quarterly basis. Paid membership in the Society is included with all awards.

Application

The application consists of a statement of the problem, an account of existing analyses under CS and other theoretical approaches, a brief preliminary review of the relevant literature, and a description of the data to be used. The application is not to exceed 10 double-spaced pages written in 12-point font.
Applicants should indicate whether they are in a position to be considered for the Postdoctoral Residential Fellowship, and should provide the names of two references. The application should include the applicant's CV, including telephone number and email address, and the name of the graduate school where the Ph.D. was obtained. The CV is not included in the page limit for the application.

Applicants who have received funding from the Society in the past must include with the new application a report on previous funding. See below for information regarding the format of the report, which is not counted in the page limit for the new application.

The deadline for receipt of proposals is May 31, 2019. Proposals will be reviewed by members of the Society’s Executive Committee, assisted by such additional reviewers as they may deem appropriate. The Society will make every effort to notify applicants by the end of June 2019. The application must be submitted electronically to Professor Alan Huffman of the City University of New York. His email address is ah620@columbia.edu.

Requirements of the Awards

The recipient of the Residential Postdoctoral Fellowship is expected to live in NYC or its surrounds for the period of the fellowship. Each award recipient is expected to:

  • be an active supporter of the Society in all activities pursuant to its mission

  • participate on a regular basis in the CS Society Seminar (non-residential awardees have the option of participating remotely)

  • consult with other CS scholars

  • be the lead presenter at the Society Seminar once in the Fall and once in the Spring

  • provide a written year-end progress report detailing the state of the analysis at the end of the fellowship period. The report should be in the format of a paper being prepared for publication.

  • make every effort to publish results in a recognized academic venue (publications resulting from the Fellowship should acknowledge the support of the Society and copies should be sent to members of the Society's Executive Committee).

  • The report is due no later than August 31, 2020. It should be submitted to Professor Huffman (ah620@columbia.edu).
