This introductory course will be held online in nine sessions, on Tuesdays, 2:00 pm-4:00 pm (New York time), October 3rd to November 28th.

This year’s instructors are:

Andrew McCormick, City University of New York, Graduate Center

Daan van Soeren, University of Groningen

Ludmila Novotny, Universidad nacional de la Plata

The course is particularly designed for:

  • New Columbia School fellows and seed grantees

  •   Senior undergraduate and graduate students of linguistics or related areas

  • Linguistics scholars and professionals who are unfamiliar with the Columbia School framework

We will be focusing on the main theoretical and methodological concepts of the Columbia School of Linguistics, a functionalist approach that aims to account for the distribution of grammatical and lexical items in naturally-occurring discourse, based on the understanding that language is fundamentally an instrument for human communication, and that its characteristics are shaped by the physical and cognitive capacities of its human users. The language of the course is English. Certificates of completion will be issued.
